The Philosopher’s Path, leading to Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), is one of Kyoto’s most picturesque walks, lined with charming cafes and coffee shops. Whether you’re looking for a cozy hideaway, a classic kissaten, or a modern specialty coffee stand, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a guide to the best cafe stops in the area.
⭐Pomme
A small, family-run cafe known for its homemade cakes. We tried the orange cake, a dense yet soft pound cake with zesty orange flavor. It paired perfectly with a hot coffee. A delightful stop for simple but well-made desserts.
Saigan Coffee (珈琲店 再願)
A classic kissaten that opens at 9 AM, making it a great breakfast spot after an early walk along the Philosopher’s Path. Their tamago sandwiches are highly recommended.
GOSPEL (ゴスペル)
Located on the second floor of a building in Jodoji Kaminandacho, this cafe has been featured in Tabelog’s Top 100 Cafes (2021 & 2022). The antique decor and calm ambiance make it a relaxing space. Their scones and coffee are particularly well-rated.

Cafe 吟遊詩人
Opened in May 2024, this cafe was founded by a former Professor Emeritus from Kyoto University who is passionate about high-quality coffee. They serve hand-drip coffee, teas, and hot sandwiches, making it a solid choice for a relaxing stop.
AG COFFEE. 銀閣寺
A modern cafe with a light roast specialty. Offers various milk options, vegan-friendly choices, and WiFi. Their nerikiri (traditional Japanese confectionery) paired with coffee is a unique highlight, blending Japanese sweets with expertly crafted coffee. A great stop if you need a recharge station with outlets.

Located at the entrance of the Philosopher’s Path and Ginkakuji, this budget-friendly cafe offers freshly brewed coffee (starting at 300 yen), matcha lattes, and fluffy toast in butter, jam, and cinnamon varieties. Seasonal specials include affogato in summer and kaitenyaki (stuffed pancakes) in winter.

We tried the omurice with demi-glace sauce, which had ketchup chicken rice inside. The demi-glace was rich and well-balanced, with hints of wine. The pear tart was also a pleasant treat, pairing well with a simple cup of coffee.
Moan (茂庵)
A hidden cafe at the summit of Mount Yoshida, housed in a Taisho-era wooden building. Offers stunning panoramic views of Kyoto City and Mount Daimonji. Originally closed in August 2022, it reopened in January 2023 due to popular demand.
