Where to Stay in Hiroshima: Why the City Center Is Your Best Base 🕊️

by | 04/18/2025 | Travel Tips

Hiroshima is one of Japan’s most meaningful and rewarding travel destinations. Whether you’re coming to explore its history, enjoy the local food, or take a day trip to Miyajima, where you choose to stay will shape your experience. The good news?

The best place to stay in Hiroshima is the city center, near Peace Memorial Park, Kamiyacho, and Hondori.

Let’s break down why this area is ideal—and why you should skip staying near Hiroshima Station or on Miyajima Island.

✅ Why You Should Stay in Central Hiroshima

The heart of Hiroshima offers a perfect balance of accessibility, atmosphere, and authenticity. Staying near Peace Memorial Park or the Hondori shopping arcade means you’re surrounded by everything that makes Hiroshima special.

🏛️ You Can Walk to the Main Attractions

From your hotel, you’ll be able to walk to:

  • Peace Memorial Park and the A-Bomb Dome
  • The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
  • Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden
  • Museums, galleries, and cultural sites
  • The Hondori and Kamiyacho shopping arcades

You won’t need to spend time transferring between trains or buses—you’ll already be in the middle of it all.

🍜 Great Access to Food, Shops, and Nightlife

Hondori and the surrounding streets are filled with:

  • Local okonomiyaki restaurants
  • Cozy izakayas and sake bars
  • Cafes, bakeries, and international restaurants
  • Late-night food spots and riverside walks

You can finish your day with a peaceful evening walk through Peace Memorial Park or enjoy a casual drink without needing to hop on a tram.

🚋 Easy Transportation When You Need It

Streetcars (trams), buses, and taxis are readily available from the city center. You’ll be able to:

  • Reach Hiroshima Station in about 15 minutes
  • Get to the ferry port for Miyajima
  • Move between neighborhoods with no stress

If you’re a first-time visitor, this is where Hiroshima comes alive, and you’ll feel it as soon as you step out of your hotel.

🚫 Why You Shouldn’t Stay Near Hiroshima Station

At first, it might seem logical to stay near Hiroshima Station. After all, that’s where the Shinkansen (bullet train) stops. But here’s why we recommend otherwise:

  • The area is mainly built for business, not tourists
  • Most restaurants and shops close early
  • There are very few things to see or do nearby
  • You’ll need to take a tram every time you want to explore

It’s clean, modern, and safe—but lacks charm and character. If you’re only in Hiroshima for a night and plan to leave early the next morning, it might be okay. Otherwise?

Skip the station. Stay where you’ll actually enjoy your time outside the hotel.

🚫 Why Staying on Miyajima Sounds Better Than It Is

Miyajima is one of the most beautiful places in Japan. The floating torii gate, the quiet forests, the roaming deer—it’s unforgettable.

But staying overnight?

Not ideal for most travelers.

  • Most shops and restaurants close by 6 or 7 PM
  • Once the day-trippers leave, the island becomes very quiet
  • Evening food options are limited and often only in ryokans
  • It takes about 45–60 minutes to get back to central Hiroshima

Also, accommodations on the island are more expensive, especially during high season. If you’re not booking months in advance, your options will be limited.

Miyajima is best visited as a day trip. Arrive early, explore fully, and return to your comfortable base in the city.

✨ Final Thoughts

If you’re visiting Hiroshima, don’t waste time commuting between your hotel and the places you want to see. Stay right in the heart of the city, where you’ll be surrounded by its story, spirit, and soul.

Peace Memorial Park. Local restaurants. Hidden bars. Scenic walks. Everything you came to Hiroshima for is right there.
